Ryan Conrad Tribute

One week ago I said goodbye On Thursday February 23, 2017 at 6:40am, Ryan Conrad, a friend, student, teacher, and mentor died peacefully, after a yearlong journey with cancer. On Friday, morning I arrived early to bring roses and see him one last time to say goodbye. He looked peaceful and seemed to smile when I recited a prayer for him. I sat beside him for a time and read from the Tibetan book of the dead. “His family and close friends gathered at his home as his body was carried away amidst rose petals, tears, and hugs. His body was 38 years old. His essence lives on.” Ryan Conrad...

All that was interesting enough, however the Monday yoga class following the election was most interesting to me. As a Back Care Specialist I am aware of how emotions play a role in back pain. It seems to make common sense, at least in the yoga world,...

What is True Safety?

From a Buddhist perspective, danger is normal. Guest post by  Thanissaro Bhikkhu With the post election distress many of my brothers and sisters, i.e. yoga students this past week, I found this article offered very helpful guidance. I share a few high points in my mind here, yet invite you to read the article in its entirety. A short reflection that is often chanted.. in Theravada monasteries states, in part, “I am subject to aging . . . subject to illness . . . subject to death.” That’s the standard English translation, but the standard Thai translation is more pointed: “Aging is normal for...

Newsweek Special Edition – Yoga Life

Diversity in Yoga The October 22, 2016 issue of Newsweek magazine is dedicated to yoga. I eagerly read each page as the principles of and perspectives on yoga we’re brilliantly laid out by excellent writers. If you are involved in the practice of yoga in anyway, I recommend you purchase a copy and look it over. It’s a beautiful reflection on the current, diverse, and pervasive practice of yoga in the US. Back in Action The section entitled “back in action” of course peaked my interest as I have recently completed my book Healing Our Backs with Yoga: an essential guide...
